FAQ

Q: What ARE these things?

A: ThermalEyes heat packs are a material bag filled with food grade rice that can be used either hot (to treat the symptoms of dry eye) or cold (to alleviate symptoms of allergy).

They are included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as a Grade 1 medical device [ARTG Number 234383] and are 100% Australian made by an optometrist who is passionate about dry eyes and sewing!

Q: Help, my microwave is on fire!

A: It is important that you check the heat by placing it on your forearm and testing for 10-15 seconds. You can heat for a further 10 seconds if you require it to be hotter, or leave to cool until it reaches a comfortable temperature.

If a burning smell is detected your ThermalEyes heat pack needs to be discarded. Over time the rice inside your heat pack will dry out and start to emit a burnt smell - this is letting you now that it is time to replace your heat pack.

Fire may occur from an old, overused heat pack that is continually overheated. This is unlikely but caution should always be exercised. If in doubt – throw it out.

Q: I'm hungry and my cupboard is bare... can I eat the rice?

A: We don't recommend it, but I guess if there's a global rice shortage your could use it at a pinch.

Q: Should I store it with the rest of my rice in between uses?

A: It is suggested that ThermalEyes be kept in an airtight container or sealed bag.  You can also permanently store ThermalEyes in the freezer in a ziplock bag.

Q: My heat pack got wet.

A: It's a bit like Mogwai... don't get it wet.

Unless you want risotto, or you harbour ambitions of becoming a rice farmer, do not wet your heat pack. You can use a damp sponge to lightly clean the outside of the bag and then place into the microwave and heat for the recommended time.

Q: How long will my heat pack last?

A: Like a marriage between two movie stars, ThermalEyes heat packs should be discarded after 6 months.

Q: My friend has gunky eyes... should I lend her my heat pack?

A: Uh, no. For hygiene reasons, it is recommended that you do not share packs.

Q: What if I'm not happy?

A: ThermalEyes heat packs are designed to treat the symptoms of dry eye, not solve your life problems.

However, although we may not be able to fix a broken heart or cure cancer, we want you to be 100% happy with your ThermalEyes product therefore, we offer a 100% no-questions-asked 30 day returns policy. If you are not happy with your purchase, for whatever reason, simply return the product to us for a full refund of the purchase price. Please note, there is no refund on the original or return delivery charges. ThermalEyes heat packs will be replaced or repaired if the seams split within 6 months of purchase.

Q: I don’t have a microwave. Is this a problem?

A: All is not lost! ThermalEyes heat packs can be heated in a conventional oven (with extreme caution). Turn your oven on to 140°C for normal ovens and 120°C for fan forced ovens. Place the heat pack onto a baking tray and place into the middle of the oven for 10 minutes. Test on your forearm before placing over your eyes. If the heat is not warm enough then return to the oven for a further 3-5 minutes.

Q: What else can I use ThermalEyes heat packs for?

A: In its testing phase, ThermalEyes heat packs have been used as:

  • a treatment for mastitis
  • a hacky sack
  • a mini heat pack for sore backs
  • 'I'm cold'
  • 'my hands are cold'
  • juggling 'practice'
  • a missile to throw at colleagues
